Frequently Asked Questions
We understand that integrative and functional medicine may be a new approach for many patients. Below you will find thorough answers to the most common clinical, logistical, and financial questions we receive at our Portland practice. If your question is not addressed here, please call us at (503) 555-0247 or send a message through our contact form.
Functional medicine is a systems-biology approach that seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease rather than simply managing symptoms. Where conventional medicine often focuses on a specific organ or diagnosis in isolation, functional medicine maps the complex web of interactions among genetics, environment, diet, gut microbiome, hormonal signaling, and lifestyle factors that contribute to illness. At WellLife Integrative Health, Dr. Sarah Chen uses the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) matrix model to organize clinical findings across seven biological systems — assimilation, defense and repair, energy, biotransformation, communication, transport, and structural integrity. Advanced laboratory testing such as DUTCH Complete hormone panels, GI-MAP comprehensive stool analysis, organic acids tests, and micronutrient evaluations allow us to detect subclinical imbalances years before they become diagnosable conditions in a standard workup.
WellLife Integrative Health operates as an out-of-network provider for most commercial insurance plans. We provide detailed superbills (CMS-1500 claim forms) with appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes after each visit, which you may submit to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans reimburse 50 to 80 percent of allowable charges for physician office visits and acupuncture. We strongly encourage patients to verify their out-of-network integrative medicine benefits before scheduling. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are accepted for all clinical services, including acupuncture, functional lab testing, IV nutrient therapy, and medical nutrition consultations. Prescription supplements ordered through our Fullscript dispensary are also HSA/FSA eligible when recommended by a licensed provider. Payment is due at the time of service via credit card, debit card, HSA/FSA card, or check.
Your initial consultation at WellLife is a comprehensive 90-minute evaluation. Before your appointment, you will receive a secure online intake form covering your complete medical history, family health background, medication and supplement list, dietary habits, sleep patterns, stress levels, and specific health goals. During the visit, Dr. Chen reviews your functional medicine timeline — a chronological map of significant health events, triggers, and mediators. She performs a focused physical exam as indicated, reviews any prior lab work, and discusses advanced functional testing recommendations tailored to your case. You will leave with a clear understanding of our clinical hypothesis, an initial treatment plan outline, lab requisitions if applicable, and a follow-up schedule. Most patients describe the experience as the most thorough medical evaluation they have ever received.
Treatment timelines vary significantly based on the nature and duration of your condition. Acute complaints such as tension headaches, mild digestive distress, or recent-onset insomnia may respond within two to four weeks of targeted intervention. Chronic conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, adrenal insufficiency, SIBO, or autoimmune inflammation typically require a phased 12- to 24-week protocol before meaningful biomarker improvement is measurable. Acupuncture for chronic pain often shows initial relief within three to five sessions, with cumulative benefits building over an 8- to 12-session series. Dr. Chen establishes specific functional lab benchmarks at baseline and retests at defined intervals — usually 8, 12, or 16 weeks — so both clinician and patient can objectively track progress rather than relying on subjective improvement alone. Patience and consistency with prescribed protocols are essential for lasting results.
Absolutely. Collaborative, integrative care is a core principle at WellLife. With your written authorization, Dr. Chen sends detailed consultation reports and lab summaries to your primary care physician, endocrinologist, rheumatologist, gastroenterologist, or any other specialist involved in your care. We view integrative medicine as a complement to, not a replacement for, conventional medical management. If you are currently taking prescription medications, we never advise discontinuation without coordination with your prescribing physician. Our goal is to bridge the gap between conventional and holistic approaches, ensuring all members of your care team are informed and aligned. Many Portland-area physicians actively refer patients to our practice for functional diagnostic workups, acupuncture, and nutritional medicine consultations.
We utilize a range of advanced functional and conventional laboratory panels depending on your clinical presentation. Common tests include the DUTCH Complete (dried urine test for comprehensive hormones including cortisol, estrogen metabolites, and melatonin), GI-MAP (DNA-based comprehensive stool analysis for pathogens, commensal bacteria, and digestive function markers), Organic Acids Test (OAT) for mitochondrial function and neurotransmitter metabolites, NutrEval or Genova ION for micronutrient status, and comprehensive thyroid panels with antibodies (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TPO-Ab, TG-Ab). Standard blood draws are processed through Quest Diagnostics or LabCorp and may be partially covered by insurance. Specialty functional labs such as Diagnostic Solutions, Precision Analytical, and Great Plains are billed directly to the patient at wholesale cost, typically ranging from $150 to $450 per panel.
Most patients are pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture is far less uncomfortable than they expected. The sterile, single-use needles we employ are extremely fine — approximately 0.20 to 0.25 mm in diameter, roughly one-fifth the thickness of a standard hypodermic needle. During insertion, you may feel a brief sensation described as a slight pinch, tingling, or dull ache known as “De Qi” in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which indicates appropriate needle engagement with the meridian point. Once the needles are placed, most patients enter a deeply relaxed, meditative state; many fall asleep during the 25- to 40-minute retention period. Electroacupuncture, used for chronic pain and neurological conditions, adds a gentle pulsing stimulation that some patients describe as a mild buzzing or rhythmic tapping. Post-treatment, patients frequently report improved sleep, reduced pain, and a profound sense of calm lasting several days.
Supplement quality is a critical concern in integrative medicine, as the industry remains largely unregulated at the retail level. WellLife exclusively recommends and dispenses professional-grade, practitioner-only supplement lines that undergo third-party testing for identity, purity, potency, and contaminant screening. Our preferred brands — including Thorne Research, Designs for Health, Pure Encapsulations, Integrative Therapeutics, and Metagenics — manufacture under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards with NSF International or USP verification. We maintain an online dispensary through Fullscript, providing patients convenient home delivery at a 15% practitioner discount. Dr. Chen never recommends supplements without a clear clinical rationale supported by lab data or validated symptom assessment. Therapeutic doses, bioavailable forms (such as methylated B vitamins or chelated minerals), and potential drug-nutrient interactions are carefully evaluated for each patient.
Yes. WellLife offers HIPAA-compliant video telehealth consultations for established patients and for new patients residing in Oregon who are unable to visit our Portland clinic. Telehealth appointments are ideal for functional medicine follow-ups, lab result reviews, nutrition counseling, and ongoing treatment plan adjustments. Initial consultations are strongly recommended in person to allow for a thorough physical examination, vital sign assessment, and hands-on diagnostic evaluation. Acupuncture, IV therapy, and other in-office modalities naturally require an in-person visit. Our telehealth platform uses end-to-end encrypted video through our EHR system, and scheduling is available through the same online booking portal. Telehealth visit fees are identical to in-person visit fees and are billed with appropriate telehealth modifier codes for insurance superbill submission.
WellLife Integrative Health welcomes patients aged 12 and older for functional medicine, clinical nutrition, and select acupuncture services. Pediatric and adolescent patients must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at every visit. Common conditions we address in younger patients include adolescent acne related to hormonal imbalance, anxiety and attention difficulties, recurrent digestive complaints, food sensitivities, and sports-related musculoskeletal pain. For children under 12, we maintain a referral network of trusted pediatric naturopathic physicians and integrative pediatricians in the Portland metro area who specialize in younger populations. All supplement dosing and herbal recommendations for adolescent patients are carefully weight-adjusted and reviewed for age-appropriate safety profiles.
To maximize the value of your initial 90-minute consultation, we recommend completing the following before your visit. First, fill out the comprehensive intake forms sent to your email upon booking — these cover your medical history, current medications and supplements, family health patterns, dietary habits, and symptom questionnaires. Second, gather and upload any relevant prior lab results, imaging reports, or specialist consultation notes from the past two years. Third, prepare a written list of your top three to five health concerns ranked by priority, along with any specific questions you would like to discuss. On the day of your appointment, arrive 10 minutes early, wear comfortable clothing if acupuncture is anticipated, and eat a light meal beforehand to avoid low blood sugar during the evaluation. Bring your insurance card and a valid photo ID for our records.
We require a minimum of 24 hours advance notice for appointment cancellations or rescheduling. Because our initial consultations and follow-up visits are significantly longer than standard medical appointments, a missed or late-cancelled visit represents a substantial time block that cannot easily be filled. Cancellations made with fewer than 24 hours notice or no-show appointments are subject to a $75 late cancellation fee. This fee is not covered by insurance or HSA/FSA. We understand that emergencies arise and will always make reasonable accommodations for genuine urgent situations. To cancel or reschedule, please call our office at (503) 555-0247 or use the online patient portal. Repeated late cancellations (three or more within a 12-month period) may result in a required prepayment deposit for future appointments.
