Integrative Services & Clinical Modalities

At WellLife Integrative Health, we combine the diagnostic rigor of conventional medicine with validated complementary therapies. Each service below represents a distinct clinical modality; many patients benefit from a multimodal treatment plan that combines two or more approaches for synergistic healing outcomes. All services are delivered by licensed, board-certified practitioners in our private Portland clinic.

Core Clinical Service

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a systems-biology approach that seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease rather than merely treating symptoms. Using the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) framework, Dr. Sarah Chen conducts comprehensive health evaluations that examine the complex web of interactions between your genetics, environment, lifestyle, and biochemistry. This model recognizes that one condition can have many different causes, and one cause can manifest as many different conditions, requiring a highly individualized diagnostic and therapeutic strategy.

Our functional medicine consultations begin with a detailed intake questionnaire covering your complete medical history, family health patterns, dietary habits, sleep quality, stress exposure, environmental toxin contact, and medication history. During the 90-minute initial visit, Dr. Chen constructs a functional medicine timeline that maps the antecedents, triggers, and mediators contributing to your current health picture. This timeline-based approach frequently reveals connections between seemingly unrelated symptoms that conventional 15-minute office visits cannot capture.

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

Our acupuncture program is administered by Liang Wei, L.Ac., a NCCAOM-certified licensed acupuncturist with advanced training in both classical Five Element and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic frameworks. Acupuncture has been extensively studied in over 14,000 peer-reviewed clinical trials and is recommended by the World Health Organization for dozens of conditions including chronic pain, migraine, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and infertility.

Each initial acupuncture visit begins with a thorough TCM diagnostic assessment that includes tongue inspection, radial pulse palpation at three positions bilaterally, abdominal palpation (hara diagnosis), and detailed symptom pattern differentiation. This traditional evaluation identifies the specific pattern of disharmony underlying your symptoms, whether that is Liver Qi stagnation, Kidney Yin deficiency, Spleen Qi deficiency with dampness, or another recognized constitutional pattern. Treatment points are selected based on this individualized diagnosis, not generic protocols.

We use sterile, single-use, FDA-approved filiform needles (Seirin and DBC brands, 32-40 gauge). Most patients experience minimal to no sensation during insertion. Needle retention time ranges from 20 to 35 minutes depending on the treatment goals. Complementary modalities including moxibustion (moxa), cupping therapy, gua sha, and auricular (ear) acupuncture may be incorporated as clinically indicated.

Nutritional Medicine

Clinical Nutrition & Metabolic Optimization

Food is medicine, and our clinical nutrition program goes far beyond generic dietary advice. Led by Emma Novak, CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist), our evidence-based approach uses advanced micronutrient testing, food sensitivity panels, organic acids testing, and comprehensive metabolic biomarkers to design highly individualized nutrition protocols that support your specific biochemistry, health goals, and lifestyle.

Initial Assessment

Clinical Nutrition Consultation

A comprehensive 60-minute evaluation of your dietary patterns, nutritional status, digestive function, and metabolic health. Includes detailed food-mood-symptom diary analysis, recommended laboratory panels, and a preliminary therapeutic nutrition framework. We assess macronutrient ratios, micronutrient adequacy, inflammatory dietary triggers, blood sugar regulation, and gut microbiome support strategies.

Stress & Nervous System

Mind-Body Therapies & Stress Medicine

Chronic psychological stress is one of the most potent drivers of systemic inflammation, hormonal disruption, and immune suppression. Our mind-body medicine program offers structured therapeutic interventions that regulate the autonomic nervous system, reduce cortisol dysregulation, and build sustainable emotional resilience.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

8-week structured MBSR program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMass Medical Center. Includes guided meditation instruction, body scan practices, gentle yoga, and cognitive reframing techniques. Clinically proven to reduce cortisol, C-reactive protein, and anxiety severity scores.

$125 per session • 60 min

Clinical Breathwork & Vagal Toning

Therapeutic breathing protocols targeting vagus nerve activation and parasympathetic dominance. Techniques include box breathing, coherent breathing at 5.5 breaths per minute, Wim Hof-inspired cold exposure integration, and heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback training for measurable autonomic improvement.

$125 per session • 30 min

Guided Visualization & Somatic Therapy

Practitioner-led guided imagery and somatic experiencing sessions for patients dealing with chronic pain, trauma-related stress responses, or psychosomatic symptom patterns. These evidence-based approaches work with the body's innate capacity to release stored tension and recalibrate the nervous system's threat response.

Advanced Therapeutics

IV Nutrient Therapy

Intravenous nutrient therapy delivers therapeutic concentrations of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract for 100% bioavailability. This is particularly valuable for patients with compromised gut absorption, severe nutrient depletion, acute viral illness recovery, or chronic conditions requiring supraphysiologic nutrient levels that oral supplementation cannot achieve. All IV infusions at WellLife are prepared in our on-site compounding suite using USP-grade ingredients and administered under direct physician supervision.

Prior to your first IV therapy session, a brief medical screening ensures safety. We review your current medications, allergies, kidney function, and relevant lab values. Patients with renal insufficiency, G6PD deficiency, or certain cardiac conditions may require modified formulations or alternative delivery methods. Each infusion takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes in our comfortable treatment suite with filtered water, organic herbal tea, and relaxation amenities available during your session.
